SOLD A fine 16th century Italian embroidered crimson velvet hanging.

$2,450.00

A fine 16th century Italian embroidered crimson velvet wall hanging. Formerly the property of Jean-Joseph Marquet de Vasselot (1871-1946) the French archaeologist, art historian and curator of the Louvre Museum 1906-1926 and then the Musee de Cluny until 1933. Inheriting and cataloging the famous collection of medieval art from his father in law Martin le Roy it is likely that this hanging originates from that provenance. In 1996 an ivory statue from the collection was sold for the world record price for piece of medieval art of 6 million euros. In any case the hanging reflects the collection tastes of elite collectors in the late 19th century and early 20th century when such textiles were very highly valued. Circa: 1580 Height: 147cm, Width: 125cm.
