Description

A rare 17th century Italian domed top coffret. Covered in rust coloured velvet with applied embossed metal bands and metal studs. The remarkable interior lined with 18th century silk damask with elaborate appliqued ribbon work, braids and velvet. Rare in this size, this type of casket or coffret is often thought to be of Venetian origin and several examples are held in historic Italian collections. However the true origin of the workshop or area that produced these has never been satisfactorily established and a Spanish origin is also a very distinct possibility.
