Description
A very fine early 17th century Spanish Reliquary bust. The exquisitely decorated figure of Saint Simon de Roxas (Saint Simon de Rojas died 1624) with a labelled bone reliquary fragment. The polychrome figure wearing elaborate brocaded robes very finely decorated with gold and resting on a base with Latin inscription. Saint Simon (a member of the Trinitarian Order) was a highly venerated figure in late 16th and early 17th century Spain. He was confessor to the Spanish Queen and tutor to her children and was considered a Saint even on his death bed. The reliquary is decorated and carved in the round to be seen at all angles.
